Firebug I'm going to have to say that Firebug is possibly the most useful tool any web developer could ever use. It gives you complete access to the HTML, CSS, and entire DOM of a site. You can inspect each element of the DOM, and more significantly, edit things as you see fit. Make little CSS changes here and there, live, and see what you should apply to your site. And so much more! This is a must have for a web developer.
Firefox What am I supposed to say? FireFox is a great, quick browser which you can extend in many ways. It also has proper compliance with web standards, so you can ensure any website you look at is being rendered properly. Tabs, Add-ons, extensions, skins, yea! That, AND the IE-Tab plugin make FireFox your all-in-one solution.
Game Maker Game Maker is a pretty sweet tool for creating games. It's great for both novices who don't know how to do anything except drag n drop, and for programming game designing professionals. Don't be fooled by it's childish appeal, you can't go wrong with the ease, usefulness, and potential of Game Maker!
Game Trailers This is probably the best source for video game media ever. Find previews, trailers, gameplay, and specials related to almost any new or upcoming game. Let's face it, if you're reading this website you're already at least partially a nerd, and you know it's awesome. So check out the fun stuff.
GateWorld The Stargate series are great shows. Get updated on them here.
GIMP Forget Photoshop. Why spend $600+ when you can get free awesome image editing in a nice compact quick little bundle? GIMP is provides graphics editing on a professional level, complete with complicated (yet easier/cheaper/better than photoshop) functions for simple things and lots of fun-filled filters which can make some very good looking images.
jQuery jQuery is a wonderful Javascript library, probably the best one out there if you ask me. The structure is just slightly different than most high level programming languages, but I absolutely love it. You may notice many of it's features are used quite a bit on the new version of this website, in fact! It is a great tool which really simplifies some of Javascript's convoluted-ness in some areas, and allows for quick but powerful client-side dynamic scripting!
LogMeIn LogMeIn is exceptional remote desktop software. It is extremely simple and very effective. Even the free version is very powerful, and if you work on multiple computers (such as work and home computers) you'll find it very useful indeed. Try it out!
Notepad++ Notepad++ is wonderful web/software development software. If you don't feel like being tied down to a bulky web editing program containing dozens of features you'll never use, this is the one for you! I originally found it because I wanted something with the simplicity of Notepad (since I hand code everything), but still would color-code my syntax and everything. And I found this beautiful program! And if you slap the FTP plugin onto this, it can become a one-stop web programming machine!
Overclocked Remix There aren't many things better than hearing remixed new-age versions of your favorite catchy tunes from classic videos games, huh? This is the largest community for video game music arrangement and sharing. It's awesome, there's many music geniuses on here, and many excellent quality songs they've created. Check it out, you won't regret it.
Pandora The Music Genome project at it's finest. Pandora is one of those sites that helps you to find other kinds of music or songs you might like. However, unlike most sites, it actually works! Pandora is great, just type in the name of the song you like and it matches it up with others you'll probably like due to a variety of different factors depending on the songs. Awesome!
Pidgin Pidgin (previously Gaim) is pretty much awesome. Well eh, there's the support for all kinds of IM protocols etc. But what's more! The plug-ins make it sooo awesome! I was reluctant to try Pidgin at first, but now I love it! Forget Trillian, Meebo, and those other poser "all-in-one" solutions, Pidgin owns!
Portable Apps You can NOT go wrong with Portable Apps. Man, this site is great. It has versions of your favorite freeware programs that allow you to store all of the settings, configurations, everything doing with the program on your USB flash drive! It's so useful! I use Portable Pidgin, FireFox, and GIMP. No matter what computer I go to, I can simply pop my USB in and BAM! All of my "essential" applications, just the way I left them, are ready for me. Great for nerds or just people who want to be sophisticated and cool.
SUPER SUPER is possibly the best tool for video/audio conversion. Did I say possibly? Forget that, it is THE best. SUPER can convert almost ANY media format into almost ANY other media format, EVER. And there's lots and lots of settings you can choose to have it turn out just the way you like it. Forget those stupid video trial converters with ads that you have to pay a useless amount of money for. SUPER gives you all the of conversions utilities you could ever want ever, so use it. NOW!
Tunatic Tunatic is free music identification software, how cool is that? Basically you can have the program listen to a song (like, in a video or something else) and it will give you the title and artist of the song! That is, if it's not too obscure. This works great, especially if you directly plug your audio output into your line-in so you can directly identify songs in videos and such. Great stuff, get it now and stop asking everybody "what song is in blah blah."
uTorrent uTorrent is a very lightweight, very effective piece of torrent software. It replaced the large, bulky, memory hogging, Java-based Vuze for me. It's quick, simple, and fast! It's pretty much all you'll ever need.
Xampp Xampp is a great tool for emulating a server on your local machine. Create PHP scripts, MySQL database, and more on your local machine just like you would on any other server. It's not clunky, convoluted, or too complicated! For individuals who spend lots of time developing new functionality for sites, or need to perform tests/experiments on non-live copies of a site, this is what you need! It's wonderful.
